How the exam is structured
Motor Vehicle Mechanics Works (trade code 020) is one of NABTEB’s core engineering trades for the NTC. You sit the full combination above — English and Mathematics included — plus trade papers covering engine systems, transmission, brakes and electrics in theory, and a practical exam on real vehicles and components: stripping, measuring, diagnosing and reassembling.
Where the trade leads
- Workshops: employment in mechanic workshops and service centres, or your own workshop once you have tools and a customer base.
- Fleet work: companies, transport operators and government agencies employ mechanics to maintain vehicle fleets.
- Modern diagnostics: cars are increasingly electronic; NTC holders who add scanner/diagnostic skills (or pair this trade with Automobile Electrical Works knowledge) charge premium rates.
- Further study: ND Mechanical or Automobile Engineering Technology; university with the NTC as O’level equivalent (details).
Common questions
I already work as an apprentice mechanic — why write NABTEB? The NTC turns workshop experience into a recognised certificate: it is what formal employers, and any later study, will ask for. External candidates register for the Nov/Dec window — registration guide.
How is the practical graded? It combines with your written papers into one final grade per the A1–F9 scale; strong workshop performance lifts the total.
